How to Stay Upbeat and Happy in the Winter

Freezing cold days. Gray skies. Bad mood. Despite some of the most awesome holidays of the year happening in the winter, the season itself is nothing but crabbiness and shivering. Going out with friends gets harder, and there is limited daylight to keep you motivated enough for an evening walk. Although the weather might be cold, your life does not have to be if you follow some tips for staying upbeat in the winter. 


WINTERIZE YOUR WORKOUT
There are a number of winter activities that burn major calories that do not involve shoveling. Try skiing, snowboarding, ice skating or snowshoeing.

Purchase high grade winter workout clothes (shoes with deep treads, insulated jackets, and moisture wicking hats and gloves), especially if you get cold easily and head outside when the light is out. Even if it is just 10 minutes of walking up and down the sidewalk before heading back in to finish up. Or do high intensity workouts indoors then head outside to cool off.

GET TOGETHER
Humans are not meant to hibernate. Fight the urge to hole up inside the dormitory or your bedroom and make plans to meet up with friends in warm places. Get yourselves excited for winter by saving up for a group ski or snowboarding trip, for example. Although the Caribbean works too! Also, think about working out together at the gym to keep one another motivated.

DRINK WARMTH
If it is cold outside, warm yourself up by sipping something deliciously hot. These drinks are easy to make and even have some powerful immune boosting effects!

1. Nutella Hot Chocolate -- all you need to do is heat some low fat milk in a saucepan, add the nutella as it begins to bubble. Then stir in some stevia or raw sugar and whisk slightly. Let the drink froth up before adding marshmallows or chopped hazelnuts--or both!
Tip: Add ground chipotle for a zing!


2. Golden Chai Tea -- Adding turmeric to chai tea is all the rage right now, because it is uber healthy and a snap to make. Heat some milk and add crushed cinnamon, ginger, and cloves (or a chai tea bag) alongside a dash of ground turmeric and let it simmer for several minutes. Cool and enjoy.


3. Hot Mint Ice Cream Float -- Whip up some hot chocolate then scoop in a dollop of mint ice cream. Super customizable. Super easy.

The best part about making these at home or with friends is that it is a reason to get together and saves money. Instead of going out to Starbucks, throw a hot cocoa party and see how many styles you can brew up.

SPRING IS COMING
If all else fails, just remind yourself that spring will be here soon. Give yourself something to look forward to in that season or in the future, like a vacation, graduation, or a playdate with friends. Whatever gets you excited for tomorrow, invest some attention into it today.

Staying positive about what tomorrow will bring, even when today looks cold and bleak, is where your good vibes begin! Winter might mean getting stuck indoors, less sunlight, and sadness for many, but it does not have to be you. Add some vitamin D to your diet, stay active, and most all, have fun with friends and family.
